Irene,

At my firm in DC, chrons and timesheets are convenience copies for the attorneys use and not the official file.  We allow them to keep them as long as they want.  If they leave the Firm, we keep them for 5 years past departure.  In the past, we allowed them to be stored offsite but we are changing that now.  They will be allowed to keep them but only as their own file space allows.

One caveat, we keep the original handwritten time (if it exists) as an original.  That version and the final client bill are kept for 15 years.  We have used these records to justify a position that a prior repesentation of an opposing party does not represent a conflict with a new client.

Hope that helps.

Doug

Subject: File Retention for Attorney Chron and Timesheets

Hi Everyone,

I work for a law firm in the Boston, MA area and I am researching to find out if there are any file retention rules for retaining attorney chron and timesheet files.  Over the years it has just been common practice to keep the attorney's chron files and timesheets and send them to off site storage periodically.    We are now trying to reduce the volume of our storage inventory and are looking to see if there are any retention rule in regards to these types of documents.

If anyone knows if there are any retention guidelines for attorney chron and timesheets, it would be most appreciated.

Thank you,
Irene Eklund
