Michael, 

The life insurance company I work for has gone the way of imaging and we store our records on optical disk or e-worm storage platforms that meet SEC storage requirements. We currently have an initiative underway to migrate the data off the optical platters and place everything on e-worm storage. While we do have older documents stored on microfilm/microfiche, we stopped using that medium more than 15 years ago because of the difficulty in disposing of the information with event-based retention periods.
