DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Position exists in Archives and Records Section, Government Records Branch.  Employee provides records management services to public officials in counties and municipalities. Employee surveys records systems; consults on creation, maintenance, and disposition of records in all formats and media, including electonic records; provides advice on public records concerns, imaging technologies, filing and storage sytems, and disaster recovery; conducts records management workshops for local officials; and drafts and amends retention and disposition schedules. Position collaborates with section staff to identify appropriate management of records, especially electronic records. Employee works closely with other unit staff to transfer permanently valuable county records to the state archives for permanent preservation. Frequent travel, including occasional overnight travel required. Transportation and per diem expenses reimbursed. Occasional saturday work is required.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
Considerable knowledge of records management techniques and practices, and organization of local government. Considerable knowledge of supplies, technology, and equipment used in creation and maintenance of records. Knowledge of archival techniques and practices. Ability to anlyze records systems and recommend improvements. Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials. Ability to use personal computers and word processing and allied software and familiarity with on-line resources. Ability to evaluate and analyze computerized records and to apply records management principles to modern records systems. Ability to lift records storage cartons weighing as much as 40-50 pounds. Valid NC driver's license required
 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in history, public history, public administration, or a related social science discipline and one year of archival or records management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
 Prefer additional directly related education, training and experience as specified in the description of work and knowledge, skills and abilities sections above.
