Ursula,

Yes, I am very familiar with how a company like you describe can and often does go about developing a RIM policy and retention schedule.

As a consultant in this space, that is something I assist clients with often. Some of those clients do some work themselves while others rely on consultants exclusively (regardless of whether there is in-house RM leadership).

With all due respect, I think there is some amount of hesitation, at least on my personal part, to divulge too much here. As you are a consultant who is potentially competing with me (as are others on this list), it is not in my or my employer's best interest to disclose our intellectual property, including how we specifically engage with clients on this topic.

I'd hope the majority of folks on this list will agree, I am typically very open with thoughts, ideas and advice. This time you are just asking for something that, if answered in great detail, will only likely serve to help you be more competitive in the consulting space with little reward coming to those who answer your questions. It's not personal; it's just business. :)

All of that said, I do wish you success with your current engagement and hope that you will continue to learn and contribute to the RIM side of things, including this listserv, as you develop your expertise.

Regards,
Julie
