I hope that as we branch off into areas of specialization, that there
remains a unified body of knowledge called "records management",
"archives", "information governance", etc...and that the concept of a
"general practitioner" in records management does not get lost. In my own
experience, the greatest strength I have been able to bring to the table is
the ability to link different areas of specialization into a unified whole
that creates wins for all of the associated stakeholders. I often do not
see a similar capability, for example, in IT where the different areas of
specialization can often actually conflict with each other. One can even
see this in our highly specialized health care system (this high
specialization is one of the reasons for its high cost/comparatively low
outcome nature - the left hand literally does not always know what the
right hand is doing).

Specialists deal with the details. We shouldn't give up the ability to deal
with the big picture as well. (and, BTW, I think both GARP, ISO 15489 and
the CRM offer pretty decent models of "big picture" frameworks, which may
distinguish them from some of the more technology focused frameworks).
