DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Anticipated vacancy exists in the Archives and Records Section, Government Records Branch, Records Description Unit.  Employee serves as arrangement and description archivist and applies basic archival principles and techniques in the processing of state and local government records.  Produces finding aids and provides timely and accurate reference services for processed and unprocessed collections.  Assists with physical receipt, shelving, and relocation of archival collections.  Works with division staff to determine solutions for the receipt and preservation of public records in all formats including email and other electronic records. Position may at times develop and offer training workshops on various records and archival management issues to various groups or public employees.  Occasional Saturday work required in State Archives Search Room.  Occasional travel may be required.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
General knowledge of N.C. history, places, and people, as well as the organization and operation of state and local government.  Experience and familiarity with archival arrangement and description principles and techniques.  Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate descriptions of archival material.  Working knowledge of reference sources for historical materials.  Ability to function independently with limited supervision.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, members of public agencies, and the general public.   Knowledge of restrictions on certain records by state and federal law.  Ability to lift records cartons which weigh up to 50 pounds.  Ability to use personal computers and allied software.  Valid N.C. driver's license required.  Prefer candidate that demonstrates possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through at least one year of experience in archival arrangement and description or related work.  
 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in history, public history, public administration, or a related social science discipline and one year of archival or records management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
