I'm with Steve on this one. I do not see IG = RIM 2.0; rather, I see it as
a discipline under the larger umbrella of IG, along with privacy,
information security, compliance, legal, risk management, data governance,
analytics, BI, etc. Yes, there are some people in roles that came up from
RM and might still have that as part of their title, but it's not the same.
I approach it this way: if RIM is the director, peer to the director of IT,
HR director, etc., the IG person would be a VP.
I remember having a discussion maybe 10 years ago as part of an ARMA
Conference program committee meeting that RM, and therefore ARMA, should
cover the entire universe of IM. I asked about print stream and output
management and BI and got blank stares. Both of those to me would fall
under IG but not under RM.
As to much of the rest of the thread regarding ARMA's focus on IG and the
conference as well, I will not speak to those as I just hit 4 years working
at "the association that shall remain nameless" aka AIIM. It will be
interesting I think to see what the new CEO will take as his/her charter
and mandate with respect to RM vs. IG.
