My first job was as a cashier at a dollar store. On my very first shift, we were understaffed and a few customers were being verbally abusive. The store manager took me aside and said "don't take it personally" and also "customer service is not our priority."
Some people are just unreasonable. Support your staff right, and they'll be able to take care of the other 99% of clients.

Pumping gas.  Very busy gas station (not self-service at that time).  Looking back I think that was an impetus for my desire to learn about process improvement and how good customer service meant more profits.
