Presentation Topic – Emergency Preparedness and You !!!
This talk will focus on the value of emergency preparedness and introduce participants to 
the fundamental concepts necessary for emergency planning and developing an emergency 
response plan for collections.  Topics covered will include: integrating collections planning 
into larger institutional human safety-based plans; assessing and mitigating vulnerabilities; 
the emergency planning process; the major components of an emergency plan; training a 
response team needs; emergency communication strategies; and the essential supplies to 
have on hand in the event of an emergency.  There will also be a guided conversation 
about how ARMA members might support each other during emergencies involving records. 

This talk is intended for anyone that is managing records of long-term or permanent 
retention.  Participants are encourage to review any plans that they already have in place 
in advance of the session.

Laura Hortz Stanton – Speaker

Laura Hortz Stanton is Executive Director of CCAHA. Laura assumes this role after having 
served seven years as CCAHA’s Director of Preservation Services. In this position, she 
conducted vulnerability and needs assessments, formulated disaster plans for museums, 
libraries, and other institutions, and taught preservation classes. Under her leadership, the 
Preservation Services Department implemented and presented educational programs on 
preservation planning across the country. She has served as the Vice Chair of the American 
Institute for Conservation’s (AIC) Collections Care Network, is a member of the AIC’s 
Heritage Responders Response Team, and is an active member of the Field Services 
Alliance of the American Association for State and Local History.
Laura previously served as the Curator of Collections at the Siouxland Heritage Museums in 
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she managed a significant collection of historic artifacts. 
She received her BA in Anthropology and Archaeology from Temple University and her MA 
in History and Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program, SUNY Oneonta.
