Speaker Bio:
Dr. Lori Richards is an Assistant Professor at Drexel University’s College
of Computing and Informatics. Her research focuses on two key areas in
digital curation: (1) organizational factors that influence digital curation
success, primarily in governmental and business organizations, and (2) the
educational requirements necessary to ensure that successful digital
curation occurs in these organizations.

Presentation Summary:
Records managers must engage in significant communication with colleagues
from other occupations within their organizations. This is not always easy,
because of different work-related goals and priorities and different
“languages” used within the work environment. This is especially true when
records managers work together with information technology workers, who
often not only appear to use a different manner of speaking but also often
are treated as if they are of higher status within the organization.

Dr. Richards will speak about a case study she performed in which she looked
at the ways in which a cloud computing implementation in a state government
affected the willingness and ability of records managers to engage in
exemplary management of the organization’s records.

She will discuss the incentives that led to less and lower quality records
management work and will try to highlight techniques that might ameliorate
what appears to be a natural tendency in this situation to reduce records
management activities. This will rely upon building a bridge that allows
better communication to occur between information technology personnel and
records manager
