Providence
R.I. bill bans doctors’ scribbled notes
March 20, 2011
Doctors and other medical professionals who write notes and records by hand
would face a fine under a state Senate bill. The legislation would require
physicians to type all their notes, records, and files. The lawmakers argue that
the scrawl of some doctors makes it impossible for patients to read their own
medical records. Lobbyist Steven DeToy said doctors are moving toward electronic
records, but banning handwritten notes would be detrimental to doctors in
smaller practices. (AP)
