Quote: "Drawing on a risk management perspective, this instalment introduces
the
complementary role that microfilm, and particularly computer output
microfilm (COM), can play within the broad spectrum of digital preservation.
It provides some international examples of current and best practice and
highlights some technical issues relating to standards."

I hope this quote and these standards reflect a growing awareness on the
part of COM vendors of the need to comply with both ANSI and local standards
relating to microfilm production. To date, this compliance was not been
evident based on the products I have encountered, which would tend to
undermine the whole point of the above. Attempts to raise and address the
issue have not been met with satisfactory responses.

Which raises the question - is microfilm produced by devices such as Kodak
Archive Writers considered COM? In my experience, microfilm produced in this
manner can and does meet standards.

Its unclear to me whether the issues I have encountered relate to technical
limitations of a given process (ergo the runarounds I've received), or
simply a lack of concern on the part of a given vendor. My guess is it may
have something to do with the market - COM generally working with IT;
alternatives working with RIM/archives - and the relative awareness of
related standards of these two groups.
