Patrick Cunningham's post is spot-on.  We've all become spoiled by easy 
access to information on the Internet.  As a former General Editor of 
Archivaria, believe me, we struggled (and continue to struggle) with the 
open access issue, but the journal wouldn't get published without 
subscription revenues.  One of the alternative models being kicked around 
in the scholarly publishing world is to have authors pay for the privilege 
of publishing in an academic journal.  I wonder how we'd all like that, 
especially those of us who are professionals rather than academics with 
research grants?
