There are also ADA accessibility issues, and if you are in a high seismic
rated area (4 or 5), there can be bracing issues ESPECIALLY with anything
taller than 8'.

Typically when these are installed the seller bundles them with integral
floor mounting assemblies that include inset tracks and decking that
assists in distributing the load across the floor, but depending on the
overall size of the array when fully loaded, it can exceed what some
buildings allow. One option is if the array is against a core structure of
the building which helps bear a portion of the weight.

Also, pay close attention to the layout of your lighting and sprinkler
system- most buildings have either an 8' x 12' or 10' x 10' sprinkler grid,
but if the unit is so tall that the sprinklers aren't allowed to provide
the maximum output due to the shelving being too tall, you have inadequate
protection in the event of an incident. And if your lighting follows a
North/South pattern and the shelves are installed in an East/West
direction, when the system is open, the lighting may be obscured and you
may not be able to see labels on lower shelves.

If the system you're considering is powered, make sure you have manual or
manual assist as an option to allow access in the event of a power outage
or mechanical failure.

Consider asking the vendor to provide references of local installations
similar to what you're considering that have been in use for 2, 5, 10 years
and find out if you can visit the installations. Even if the vendor says he
can't get you access, many times the other clients might be members of a
professional association someone in your office belongs to and they may let
a colleague in to see them.

Lastly, when it comes to the privacy issues, if anything being stored in
these files is subject to HIPAA, PII, PHI, PFI concerns make sure your
shelving units are not visible through a window and that the system is
equipped with HIPAA compliant privacy locks. You may end up having to
leave your "parked open" aisle empty or only have open access files stored
in it, in any case- this can potentially impact usable space.
