Law firms also have to take into account the contract requirements.  Many of 
the law firms that are retained by a client may be required to retain the 
file until they are given written permission to destroy it...especially if 
some original company documents might have been retained as part of their 
file.  At BNSF Railway, we keep a list of everything that our legal service 
providers have and we work very hard to make sure that, if we are 
subpoenaed, then the law firm that is assisting us is not releasing 
documents that we do not know about.  It is a lot of work to keep organized, 
but it ensures that we are always on the same page.
