Iowa View: State needs to recommit to preserving our past | The Des Moines
Register | desmoinesregister.com

*Why are state records* so important? These precious materials preserve
evidence of our rights as citizens. They document the work of our state
agencies and help to ensure transparency. They capture and protect the
historical legacy of what it means to be an Iowan.

Simply put, these records tell us where we have been and help guide us to
where we are going. Increased funding for records preservation is a small
price for such a value.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
