The jury's decision came almost two years after Prather turned himself in
to the 12th Judicial District Attorney's Office on a warrant charging him
with deleting digital property records while he was employed as a field
appraiser at the Otero County Assessor's Office.

At trial, the state argued that Prather had deleted the records from a
county database in February 2013 after he fell behind on his work assessing
the value of county properties for taxation purposes. The prosecution
alleged that the tampering occurred because Prather needed to complete his
work by a Feb. 8, 2013 deadline, which his supervisors set sometimes after
issuing him a verbal warning for insufficient production.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
