Hi. I'm an ICRM liaison with my chapter in Calgary and can give you some
info.
The CRA isn't really a separate designation from the CRM, but a stepping
stone to it. The CRM requires that you pass 6 exams; the CRA requires
that you pass only exams 2, 3, and 4, which pertain more to records
fundamentals. This information is all available on the ICRM website at
http://www.icrm.org/taking-the-exams/.
If you are planning to obtain the full CRM designation, and you aren't in
any hurry, my suggestion is to get the CRA first. The advantage is 1) you
more quickly have a designation you can put on your resume and business
cards, and 2) you have unlimited time to complete exams 1, 5, and 6
(normally there is a 5-year limit). If your plan is to pass all of the CRM
exams in one cycle, the CRA will just be more or less moot. (You can't
hold both designations; once you're a CRM, you're no longer a CRA.)
