Sure, David, those are all important issues.

But today, we're taking the long view.  In, say, 30 years, no one will have to worry about the duplication (duplicity? :-)) you mention.  Without some form of intervention, the Copy of Record and all of its clones will be unrecoverable because of obsolete hardware, operating systems, application software, storage media, and display/print drivers, to say nothing of lost passwords and encumbering encryption. 

So the question becomes whether to intervene once, now, or plan for periodic future efforts.
