There are two more issue beyond that to address....and I'm not disputing the thought that a 300 dpi image shows more detail than one where the scanning rate is set at 200 dpi. Here they are: (1) The higher the dpi, the more likely it is that very small characters will begin to "fill in"...both numbers and letters, if document quality is poor. I've seen that on maps and plats...and it seemed a bit perverse, but sometimes a 200 dpi scan was superior. (2) As good as resolution has become on monitors and printers.....there are limits on their ability to faithfully show or print the "additional pixels" captured on a 300 dpi scan. In many cases, it is almost impossible to tell whether a business document has been captured at 200 or 300 dpi. Y'all may disagree, but that's been my experience over the years...... Douglas P.
