At a Catholic boarding school in upstate New York, I was told "write 300 times on the blackboard 'I will not be reading in the [school] library after hours' ". Note: I was reading a school library book. I refused; was told "if you don't write this, we'll expel you". Was expelled; my mother drove down from Montreal to pick me up, fuming at the school's stupid policy. To this day (many, many decades later), I can't figure out how a monastic order which described itself as "teaching brothers" could paint itself into such a corner. The Catholic boarding school I had previously attended in Paris would have never even considered such a move....
