BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA For more than forty years the Paley Center of Media (formerly known as The Museum of Television & Radio) has been leading the discussion about the cultural, creative, and social significance of television, radio, and the emerging platforms. The core of the Paley Center is its collection of over 160,000 programs, which the non-profit institution makes accessible to the professional community and general public. As we go behind the scenes, we will learn how the Paley Center cares for this unique collection with insights on how the programs are selected, technically preserved, and catalogued. RON SIMON IS CURATOR OF TELEVISION AND RADIO at The Paley Center for Media. Among the numerous exhibitions he has curated are The Television of Dennis Potter; Witness to History; Jack Benny: The Television and Radio Work; and Worlds Without End: The Art and History of the Soap Opera. Simon has been an associate adjunct professor at Columbia University and New York University, where he teaches courses in the history of the media. He has written for many publications, including The Encyclopedia of Television and Thinking Outside of the Box: A Contemporary Television Reader, as well as serving as virtual host and creative consultant of the DVD Total Television. He is a member of the editorial board of Television Quarterly and former chair of the Peabody Awards jury, as well as a lecturer at museums and educational institutions throughout the world. DOUGLAS F. GIBBONS IS DIRECTOR, LIBRARY & INFORMATION SERVICES, for The Paley Center for Media, where the Library Services (cataloging), Research Services (research), and the Registrar's (preservation) departments report to him. His previous positions at the Paley Center include Director, Convergence and Director, Administration. He earned an M.A. in Library Science at The University of Michigan, and is a member of Beta Phi Mu (International Library Science Honor Society). During his forty years at the Paley Center he has spoken to many organizations about database, cataloging, and preservation issues, including Japan's 2000 International Symposium on Digital Archives in the New Era, as well as national conferences of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, Society for Cinema Studies, American Library Association Video and Cable Communications Section, Society of American Archivists, Theatre Library Association, and others. DOUGLAS WARNER IS THE DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING, for The Paley Center for Media, where the Technical Operations and Information Technology departments report to him. Doug joined the then Museum of Television and Radio in 2003. He spearheaded the massive project to digitize the media collection and to create media asset management systems for the staff and the public. He previously worked at ABC, Inc. as an Engineering Manager assigned to Good Morning America and Special Events where he earned a Peabody Award for Engineering Management, ABC; Coverage of September 11th and an Emmy award.
