Depending on the regulations of your state, there could be a way to turn
it over to either the state treasurer or secretary of state just like
any other unclaimed property. Usually there are required steps that an
organization must follow and document indicating an effort was made to
return the property to its owner. After you have followed those steps
and still have not found the owner there should be a another procedure
to turn it over to the state. I would start by searching for the topic
of "unclaimed property" on the official website of the state where the
property is being held.

Subject: Unclaimed Property

Dear All:

I have a question I thought you might be able to help me with. If our
company has some unclaimed property (e.g., uncashed payroll checks,
etc.), how long are we required to keep this type of documentation? I
don't think there are actually any legal requirements, but have you
heard any type of strategy on these types of records? Thanks.

Regards,
