Most states have passed very similar versions of this
uniform law.  Basically the checks in this case
are presumed abandoned after 3-5-7 years (it does vary
by state) and each year you send the property to the state.
In the uniform law and in every state law I have researched
you must retain a report showing the last known address
of the payee for 10 years.  In financial services companies
this is a big deal, millions a year, and the states can get
pretty aggressive in auditing and collecting as it is a 'free'
source of revenue.
