I would suggest that if a record has managed to survive 300 years,
retention would no longer be relevant. The age of the record alone would
pass it into the realm of artifact.

Note also that its not uncommon for the historic value of a record to
derive from different values than the original business purpose for
which the record was created. That's one reason why I highly recommend
professional archival appraisal.

I also agree with Laren that vital records and archival value are two
entirely different concepts.
