My favorite part of the wikipedia entry is:


The key word in these definitions is evidence. Put simply, a record can be
defined as "evidence of an event".


I learned this from my RM prof at grad school on day one. I repeat this so
often, usually in the context of telling people how to index their records,
that I sound like a broken record (no pun). Actually the exact words I say
are "records are merely evidence - evidence of a business transaction or
business decision".
