Does anyone know how long Facebook keeps user content? I've searched both Facebook and the Listserv Archives but have been unable to discover the answer to this question and an ongoing dialogue with Facebook is proving disheartening - they just repeat the same information on deactivated and deleted users. (And now they are not responding at all!)

Facebook policy doesn't actually address retention but it does discuss current, deactivated and deleted users. Deactivated users can reactivate their status and regain their content but those who delete their accounts cannot reactivate the deleted account and cannot regain that content. However, the policy doesn't state that Facebook removes content when users delete, just that it is no longer available to the user. It also doesn't give a timeframe of how long you have to reactivate your account and thus regain previous content. And I'm unable to find out if current users have access to all content ever posted to their account or if Facebook places a time limit or maximum messages available. I'm getting the idea that Facebook doesn't actually delete anything, regardless of user status, but haven't been able to confirm that.

Interestingly, Twitter's policy states that they keep everything although only the most recent 3200 or so messages are readily available at this time. Users can delete their own tweets.

Thank you,

Laura D. Lamont
