And I'm simply saying that if we are more pro-active at, before or during creation of a record (e.g. .doc) and advise others or DIY to convert files to interoperable format (e.g. Pdf) which can be read on mobile devices (e.g. Smartphones or eBook readers) or systems disconnected and unbundled from todays gui op systems, and we archive both versions then we probably will do better and more with less. As long as we have access to the medium on which they are stored, carefully managed electronic records will be accessible for 20 years at least!

Now if we can just determine best practices, we can do it efficiently.

> Sure, David, those are all important issues.

>

> But today, we're taking the long view. In, say, 30 years, no one will have to worry about the duplication (duplicity? :-)) you mention. Without some form of intervention, the Copy of Record and all of its clones will be unrecoverable because of obsolete hardware, operating systems, application software, storage media, and display/print drivers, to say nothing of lost passwords and encumbering encryption.

>

> So the question becomes whether to intervene once, now, or plan for periodic future efforts.

> >

> >But what about someone sitting at your desk in 2 months or 2 years? Today a

> >records creator creates a document for boss, sends email with attached .doc

> >electronic record, boss reads email, downloads and opens attachment, boss

> >approves attachment, converts it to PDF and emails to President to read on

> >iPhone which doesn't read Word docs.
