All,
I think part of the fundamental issue is the comment, " The mission of the MER Conference is to serve the Records Management and Information Governance communities." I don't understand why many refuse to get that RIM is part of the IG umbrella. We manage information regardless of format and in doing so assist in the creation of governance, including unstructured and structured data in and out of LOB applications and systems. We devise application/ system disposition processes and assist in the evaluation of tools to house and move information throughout an enterprise. We know what information is out there, how it is created and used, the compliance component around it, and who sees it... The list goes on and on including visibility into and understanding of the information flow in and out of IT asset portfolios. IG is a shared effort and continuing to segregate business functions within the effort only enables the silo mentality. In order to create viable information sharing strategies regardless of the systems or intelligence used, it takes a village. I think the systemic issue seems to be; we are not part of the digital village but rather the crotchety neighbors from Paperville that are medaling in things far to advanced for our antiquated brains to comprehend. We know that is not reality but because of traditional branding of our profession, it is a hurdle we deal with daily. The struggle between IT and RIM has been around for a long time, and until we are seen as equals at the table, it will continue to be a barriers organizations have to overcome. I am hopeful with the evolution of our profession that in time the relationship dynamic will change but until we are seen as part of the solution and not simply an operational barrier, that will not be the case.

These are just my options, not those of any organization I am affiliated with.

Cheers,
adh
