One of the stories often told by Ed Leahy was the time one of his analysts  
inventoried a vault of records for a wealthy New York family. Everything was  
neatly tied in bundles. At the end of the shelf was a bundle entitled "Pieces 
of  String Too Small To Use." That is truly careful retention.
 
One of the most interesting I had was as Supervisor of Records for the  State 
of New Jersey. I was taking an inventory of the records in a vault in the  
basement of the State house. This included a pile, and I do mean pile, of data  
processing reports covering labor, budget, etc. On the bottom of the pile I  
found a roster of soldiers for the Revolutionary War. This was a true find and  
ended up in a lobby display in the Capitol building.
 
There are many such stories that make RIM interesting.
