SharePoint is a great product, but it has a number of technical issues that make it difficult to manage documents in the repository as records (such as a lack of document-level security).  Microsoft is acutely aware of the need for records management in today’s business environment and they’re focused on addressing the issue in future product releases.  In the meantime, Meridio has a DoD 5015.2 certified records management solution that is integrated rather nicely with SharePoint.  Meridio is a Certified Microsoft Gold partner, so they work very closely with the MS development team.  The RM product is based on .Net technology, so it’s perfect for SharePoint.
