Then do searches in ACM and IEEE journals on document management, content
management, etc. Also, sometimes I just do searches in LISA and EBSCO to see
what comes up. I don't usually use Google Scholar to do a broad-based
search, because the algorithm doesn't work well with words like "record" and
"document". There is a surprising amount in IEEE on "genres" (document
types) that is very interesting and, ultimately, clueless because the
authors know nothing about records management. JASIST and the Journal of
Documentation are also wonderful. Do a historical search on Michael Buckland
for the past 20 years and you will see a treasure trove of articles on what
is a document. Birger Hjorland has published a great deal recently on what
is information. The response articles are every bit as interesting. When you
have a moment, go to http://thedocumentacademy.org/?q=node/4 to get authors
for reading as well as articles. The Document Academy was created by Michael
Buckland and Niels Lund and continues with a small, but enthusiastic crew
who are devoted to only one question: what is a document? Just when you
think you've got it, someone comes along and rips your ideas to shreds. It's
like cage-fighting for academics, but much more fun because we all like and
respect each other.

For further reading, here is the most recent semester syllabus for my
records management class:
http://www.slis.indiana.edu/syllabi/fall_2009/S604_Choksy.pdf you can go
through past semester syllabi to find more readings.

Best wishes,
Carol
