Lisa,

My experience. Track/barcode the box, redwelds go missing. Track/barcode the redwelds, folders go missing. Track/barcode the folders, documents go missing. So, track/barcode every last document! Of course this is neither practical nor cost effective, but it is the only way (as a thought exercise) I can think of to solve the problem of missing records. At some point a line might have to be drawn, Records Management is responsible for the container, not the contents. In some cases there may be extenuating circumstances (court order), and I would work with my client to track/barcode at the level they require.

Subject: Missing documents

Greetings,

I am not new to the ListServ, but I am posting now under my work email address.

Is there any way to ensure that documents are returned to files after they have been checked out? We have the files barcoded, but the documents within the files go missing. What is there, if any, best practice, to "track" documents within a file?

Thank you in advance!
Lisa
