Hi Earl,

I have a number of thoughts on this but also some evil deadlines at the
moment so I will be brief.

- IM is certainly as discoverable as any other type of information
- Prohibition never works, in no small part because every IM client
available also has a web client
- For those organizations that have a dedicated RM policy, I think that's as
good a place as any to address.
- Technology can't solve the problem in a vacuum - it has to start with a
policy, procedures to follow, training on both, and auditing for compliance.
In other words, same thing that is required for any effective information
management.
- There are two leading approaches to managing IM from a technology
perspective. One is enterprise instant messaging, which would include
Sametime and provides retention, policy enforcement, identity management,
ethical walls, and the like. The drawback is that it's internal-only. The
other is using some type of IM gateway, like Symantec IMLogic or Facetime,
that works with the commercial tools to provide similar capabilities,
particularly in the area of retention and policy enforcement.

Nancy Flynn wrote a book on IM called "Instant Messaging Rules". It's in the
ARMA bookstore and covers policy development, compliance, retention and
deletion strategies, and a sample policy.

I also wrote a lengthy article in the Jul/Aug IMJ on instant messaging, "R U
Ready for IM?" I think was the title. And I have a number of presentations I
have done on IM including the ARMA 2006 conference and a webinar for the
International Legal Technology Association (ILTA). Happy to provide those to
you or anyone else who wants them.

IF YOU WANT THEM, ASK OFF-LINE! DO NOT SPAM THE LIST PLEASE! List-spammers
(e.g. "I'd like a copy too", sent to the entire list), will get NOTHING!

Regards,

Jesse Wilkins
