It is slow, but not as slow as it was for some in the past.  I suspect the earliest libraries consisted of oral histories.  An extended checkout required significant expenditures for additional room and board so overdue materials were rarely a problem.  

The reverse was often true with librarians actively seeking to "loan" materials to others, especially the older, more difficult versions.  I had originally thought that all of those early materials were destroyed in the flood.  However, after being a participant of this list for an extended time, I believe some may have survived.
