I was appointed as the County's first FIO when the Kansas Open Records Act was updated to require that role in 2000, and I have found the role unexpectedly positive and personally rewarding. Even though I had worked for the City of Wichita for 14 years previously and already had five years with the County when I became FIO, I have learned much about government records, legalities doing the FIO work, and continue to learn new twists every few weeks. Records Management and Archives Analyst Melissa Thompson and I are working to leave the Courthouse Records Center, the RM database and the entire RM program in good shape. Last week we shipped out 39 pallets of record approved for destruction by the Board of County Commissioners. We shelved. We have two pallets worth of box stock. We restocked stretch wrap. A major update to the RM Policy is at last review before going to the Commission, along with a new KORA policy and a first e-records policy. The intent is to overlap a bit with the new hires for a smoother transition. I hired on to research and propose the County RM program 01/02/1995, and stayed another 22 years to create and run it. It's been a long run ... but I will not miss schlepping over-packed records boxes, wrapping pallets and loading trucks - these physical tasks are taking an increasing toll on both me and Melissa.
