Hello to everyone in Listserv land. To reintroduce myself, I work for a not-for-profit scientific research institute and have been actively employed in for 13 years in a variety of industries.

The time has come to revise terribly outdated job descriptions. I have created job descriptions with titles such as "Information Governance Supervisor", "Senior Information Governance Specialist", and "Information Governance Specialist". I was told the terms might be too "cutting edge" and revolutionary for the Midwest and possibly the organization. I am going to chuckle about that comment for the rest of the week and then grumble about it next week.

Yes, there is the discussion that fads and trends have come and gone and IG might do the same. It seems to me IG appears to be working and has some strong legs to run fast and far. At least it's working better than a lot of other philosophies have in the past. One of the situations I am running into is dealing with problematic stereotypes with old titles such as Supervisor Records Management, Senior Records Specialist, and Records Assistant. The job description for the last one I mentioned is almost an ancient artifact. I am not going to win the battle of Supervisor vs. Manager anytime soon so I am moving on to other issues.

I cringe when I overhear employees talking with auditors and clients and mention records (boxes and files and where they are stored). I know right then and there the auditors have written comments and concerns about lack of management or awareness of management of electronic information. At this junction, titles with the word "Records" in them are no longer helpful. I also know I'm going to have to address those comments later when the auditors and clients find me. We have SOPs, Processes, and Desk Procedures addressing electronic information management. Still, all people envision and understand is physical records no matter how many training sessions they attend or how much electronic information they create and use. I feel like I'm in some twisted Peter Pan reality and find myself shouting, "WE DO BELIEVE IN INFORMATION GOVERNANCE, WE DO, WE DO!" (This is the working title of an article I am planning for our organizational news spotlights)

Getting to my question, has anyone out there updated their job descriptions to get the perception of their program out of the box? If so, were you able to find resources to back up your changes?
I have the ARMA job descriptions and the new ARMA glossary. I can mention it was the RIM guy who rolled out and developed the new email policy which is all about IG since most of our emails are not records. I was wondering if anyone else is on the same journey and willing to share their experiences from the IG Road of Adventure.
