<Intranet, Extranet and Internet pages are becoming a key distribution
method for documentation for many businesses. It is entirely reasonable to
expect the final version of this documentation to be that which appears on
the web page.>

There are also policy considerations involved.
For example - many companies and government entities place "official" policy
on intranet sites for their employees. The policy on the intranet is
usually considered the most current statement. If an employee/employer
contretemps occurs regarding breach of policy, and the "current" policy was
the statement published on the intranet at the time of the "breach" then a
true and exact copy of that policy - as published on the intranet - will
probably be required for legal or internal purposes.
Another example - ISO 9000, 9001, and 14000 certified companies are bound by
very strigent document version control and distribution requirements. Many
companies meet these requirements by using intranets as the "official"
repository of the most current version of a document. Again - if a
compliance audit, legal situation, or contract breach issue arises, a true
and exact copy of the "official" version of the document - as published on
the intranet AT THE TIME THE INCIDENT ALLEGEDLY OCCURRED - will be required.
